This past week, South Florida residents and business owners located in Martin, Palm Beach, and Broward County found themselves at the mercy of tornado warnings, hail, high winds, lightning storms, and flash floods. Luckily, outside of a single major accident on I-95 just past the Hillsboro Blvd. exit, no one was seriously injured. However, the overall extent of the damage is expected to be widespread as videos showing cars submerged in water and images of water covering business floors continue to appear. Recent weather-related events like this one, and the record-breaking occurrence of our first ever named storm to from in January of this year, highlight what should quickly be becoming an obvious fact, preparedness is a must in protecting our South Florida homes, businesses, and public facilities.
South Florida Residences
Homeowners in Coral Springs, Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and everywhere in between, found themselves stuck in their homes last Thursday as water levels rose as high as some people’s front doors. Everywhere you looked, cars were seen abandoned in the middle of the road with water reaching as high as their windows—their hazard lights still flashing—as people took off on foot in order to make it home. Those lucky enough to be at home during the downpour were able to remain at home—although some without power.
In severe weather situations like this, having a residential standby generator to provide your home with backup power can be a lifesaver by keeping what food you have fresh and your family off the road.
South Florida Businesses
Boca Raton, Florida received the worst of the storm Thursday, with an estimated 5.76 inches of rain effecting many businesses, including those in the Town Center Mall and Mizner Park. Customers around Mizner Park—including those at Villagio and Max’s Grille—claim that water started to pour from the ceiling and light fixtures, while mall-goers waded through flooded halls caused by rainwater coming through the sides of the doors. With customers at both locations (and across the affected areas) unable to leave due to high water levels, a tornado warning in effect, and many major roads being shut down, they were forced to wait out the storm while businesses closed operations around them.
Whenever a business is forced to shut down, no matter what caused the event and whether or not it was out of the businesses’ control, customers end up leaving with a negative experience. Keep your business up and running during even the worst weather conditions with the help of a commercial backup generator.
Public Facilities
Florida Atlantic University was also hit by flash flooding, most severely at the library and computer labs. Those who risked walking under the school’s breezeway reported that the water was up to their calves. FAU decided to cancel classes beginning that Friday after 2pm in preparation for an expected continuation of storms and to assess the damage. Boca Raton City Hall was also affected by flooding on both their first and second floors, causing them to close for the remainder of the day on Thursday. Because of the damage caused by the flooding, certain departments, including Customer Service, were not able to reopen Friday.
Having a commercial or industrial standby generator in emergencies like these can help to keep South Florida’s public facilities open so that they can continue to provide their important, and sometimes critical, services. Backup generators can also help larger facilities by ensuring that backup water pumps continue to work even when the power goes out.
Having a standby residential, commercial, or industrial generator could help homeowners, businesses, and public facilities weather the storm in a comfortable and safe fashion. Standby generators are the go-to improvement systems for South Florida home and business owners who know just how unpredictable the weather can be.
