The Master Maintenance Checklist for Your Backup Generator

Regular backup generator maintenance is one of the many services we offer at Assurance Power Systems to help ensure your system is operating properly. This highly recommended service should be completed at least once a year by an electrician; although, a more prudent approach would include more frequent inspections. Below is a categorized list of how your generator should be maintained in relation to how often it is inspected by a professional.
For Annual Generator Maintenance, APS will:

Remove any water accumulated in the fuel tank in diesel-fueled generators
Restore and test the fuel tank in diesel-fueled generators
Change the oil and the air, fuel, and oil filters of your generator to guarantee optimal performance
Thoroughly inspects the crankcase vent breather
Always make sure the spark plugs are replaced after one year
Confirm the coolant concentration of the generator and flush the cooling system accordingly
Test the load bank to ensure the stability of the generator’s power source

For Bi-Annual Generator Maintenance, APS will:

Maintain your generator’s enclosure as needed
Check the battery cables and the battery electrolyte level, as well as any cable connections
Examine the drive belts and make sure they function properly
Check the coolant heater, lines and connections
Make sure there are no oil leaks or fuel leaks
Verify the operability of the lubrication and fuel system hoses and connectors
Examine and clean the exhaust system, muffler and pipe
Inspect the direct current electrical system and the control panel
Change the air filter if needed and review the air piping, connections, wiring and fixtures

For Monthly Generator Maintenance, APS will:

Check the engine coolant, oil, and fuel levels
Make sure the battery charger is functioning properly

For Weekly Generator Maintenance, APS will:

Check that your generator has no active alarms or warnings
Make sure your generator’s fuel levels are sufficient
Ensure the circuit breaker is closed
Check for and fix any oil leaks or fuel leaks
Ensure the generator is set to “Auto” for automatic startup in the event of a power outage
