Why you NEED a Generator

In a world where we are relying more and more on electricity, the grid is aging rapidly, and catastrophic weather events are increasing, can you really live without a backup generator? We don’t think so! We value your security, safety, and comfort and have developed solutions to give you the confidence you need no matter what life throws your way.

3 Indisputable Facts:

Power Outages Are Inevitable
Life Without Power Sucks
Standby Generators Are More Affordable Than Ever

1. Power Outages Are Inevitable

Today, America’s electrical grid can be described as a patchwork of outdated technology. Inspired by designs created by Thomas Edison in the late 1800s, a majority of the backbone of our power grid as we know it today was created after World War II using technology popular in the ‘50s and ‘60s. This means that nearly 70 percent of the transformers and transmission lines are a minimum of 25 years old and 60 percent of the circuit breakers are at least 30 years old. In The American Society of Civil Engineers’ 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure, our power grid was given a “mostly below standard, with a large portion of the system exhibiting significant deterioration with a strong risk of failure” rating. Our reliance on this aging electrical grid that was originally built to service a much smaller population has become a growing concern for experts who are calling for a transformation of our electrical grid. Since the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, more than $8 billion dollars has been invested in the modernization of the power grid to enhance reliability, resiliency and delivery.
America’s electrical grid is made up of roughly 7,000 power plants, connected by more than 5 million miles of power lines, overseen by 3,300 utilities that service more than 150 million customers nationwide. Experts in the electrical sector are pushing for a more decentralized system that allows for a better containment of the impact of any issues that may arise so that the affected part of the grid doesn’t wipe out power to the others. An upgrade to incorporate smart grid technologies is also recommended to help monitor electric demand fluctuations, take advantage of real-time data with the help of smart meters and use synchrophaser technology to actively monitor the health of the grid.
The evolution from our aging electrical infrastructure to a smart grid could cost up to $476 billion, but experts estimate that it could also end up saving roughly $49 billion a year due to the reduced number of power outages, as well as lower carbon emissions by up to18 percent by 2030. While the modernization of America’s electrical grid has already begun, it will be a continuous process that takes many years and requires cooperation from every state.

2. Life Without Power Sucks
There’s just no other way to put it. Long power outages have a much bigger impact than most people realize, certainly more than just the inconvenience that accompanies short, hour-long outages. The inevitable need for alternative lodgings, food sources, and repairs that follow an enduring loss of power can leave your wallet as empty as your refrigerator.

Hotels are Expensive
If your home is affected by a power outage, as well as the homes of your family and friends, your only option to retain important things like air conditioning, heating, and security, is to pack up and head to a hotel. Finding a hotel during a blackout isn’t just potentially dangerous, due to the possibility of downed phone lines or stop lights, but also expensive as rates can be inflated. If you are also the proud owner of a pet, this process can become even more difficult if your hotel of choice doesn’t accommodate your furry companion(s). As you painfully wait for your power to return, to regain the conveniences we all tend to take for granted, costs can add up quickly. This is why having and maintaining a backup generator can be far less expensive than making hotel accommodations with every blackout.
Food is Expensive
When the power goes out, so does your refrigerator and freezer’s ability to protect your food from harmful bacteria. This is especially problematic if the cause of the blackout is a storm that leaves you homebound, keeping you from stocking up on nonperishables like soup and other canned goods. With a backup residential generator, your power will remain on throughout the storm, keeping your perishable foods fresh and/or frozen.
Post-Flooding & Moisture Damage Renovations are Expensive
If your home’s basement is quick to flood, you probably have a device called a sump pump, which prevents the excess accumulation of water and protects against flooding. However, sump pumps, like many appliances, don’t function when the power goes out. Standby residential generators help ensure that your sump pump is working and that your basement is safe from flooding. This is especially important as most blackouts are initiated by weather-related incidents that can cause or exacerbate flooding.
When your air conditioner shuts off for extended periods, the moisture that would have otherwise been removed from the air can wreak havoc on drywall, furniute, and artwork.  The excessive moisture after even just one week can cause damaging mold that can be costly to repair and permanently destroy family heirlooms, artwork and other items.
Losing Work Means Losing Money
If you’re one of the almost 20% of American employees who work from home, a power outage is something you simply can’t afford. The unfortunate truth is that businesses take priority over residences when it comes to regaining power, meaning that your workflow is inhibited longer than those employees who work in a commercial office. Setting up a backup generator for your home will protect you and your work responsibilities from unpredictable power outages.

3. Standby Generators Are More Affordable Than Ever
Investing in the installation and maintenance of a residential standby generator can guarantee comfort, security, and peace of mind when the rest of your neighborhood has gone dark. Recent technological advances from companies like Generac Power Systems allow you to power more with smaller generators. By managing your electrical loads during power outages, we can design an automatic standby generator system that doesn’t break the bank.
