Electric vs. Gas Tankless Water Heaters

There’s no better way to wake up in the morning than to rinse off in a steamy shower. It’s most people’s personal calm before the storm…

… until that warm water suddenly turns ice cold!

If you’re familiar with this, you may have already researched alternatives to your current water heater. These products supply endless amounts of hot water, and who doesn’t want that?

But did you know that there are electric AND gas tankless water heaters?

If you’re ready to invest in a tankless water heater, this article is for you!

Traditional Storage vs. Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters have been on the market now for some time. Despite this, many homes and buildings across South Florida still use traditional units.

Chances are you’ve seen a traditional water heater. Their large size makes them hard to miss.

But their size isn’t the only obtrusive thing about them. Their tendencies to leak and break cause major headaches for many people.

How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

Unlike traditional storage units, tankless water heaters don’t store heated water. They provide an endless supply of fresh, hot water, on demand.

Whenever someone runs a hot water tap in their shower or sink, cold water runs through a tankless unit. The tankless unit then heats that cold water with an electric heater or gas burner.

Cheaper, More Efficient, and Smaller

Tankless water heaters last longer than traditional units, and people like the idea of endless hot water – any time of the day.

With traditional units, they often need to be replaced even when one part of the unit breaks. When something in a tankless electric or gas unit needs repair, it’s easy to replace the single part.

Bacteria are also more likely to grow in traditional storage water heaters. Since there is no stored water in a tankless electric or gas unit, bacteria won’t be common.

Also, tankless water heaters are much smaller than their traditional counterparts, allowing them to be installed inconspicuously on a wall in the basement. Who doesn’t love extra space?

Electric vs. Gas Tankless Water Heaters

Sooner than later, storage water heaters will become a thing of the past. But which are better: Tankless electric or gas water heaters?

The truth is that electric and gas-fueled water heaters both have their benefits. Which is why one isn’t necessarily better than the other.

Both gas and electric tankless water heaters save energy. But the difference between the two boils down to installation and energy costs.

Electric

Tankless electric water heaters are cheaper to purchase and install compared to gas. They usually cost around $500-$800, while tankless gas water heaters can cost up to $1200.

Since they’re smaller, they’re easier to install in a variety of places. They’re also cheaper to install because they don’t require a venting system.

Gas

Tankless gas water heaters are more energy efficient than electric ones. They produce higher flow rates of hot water, and as a result, require less energy.

There are two types of tankless gas water heaters. There’s condensing heaters and non-condensing heaters.

Non-Condensing Gas Heaters

Indoor gas tankless water heaters rely on combustion. Because of this, there is a need for venting. These vented systems are non-condensing heaters.

Though they’re smaller and cost less, professionals need to install non-condensing units. The vents need to be able to emit exhaust gases produced during combustion. If not installed properly, they can be dangerous.

Condensing Gas Heaters

There are condensing units which reuse the gas and drop the need for venting altogether. Condensing units may cost more than non-condensing units, but they’re more energy efficient.

Florida electric bills are high because most homes and buildings are air conditioned. In Florida, gas is cheaper than electricity. You can save more money on utility bills with a gas tankless water heater!
